That is the reflux condenser... More reflux = higher purity (percent alcohol or proof)... See the Reflux Still Design Theory on the parent site for more information...

SS is not a fetish its a lifestyle. Nothing wrong with that. Personally I also like me some smooth argon welds.

Nothing useful??? what about all that geothermal heat you could harness for heating washes?????

I use hot tap water to heat my still. it runs about 70°C. and it's cheaper than electricity but not by much so that is an option to.
We got our first methanol factory running now. It uses CO2 from the geothermal and aluminum plants and with some genius makes it into methanol. I think we might just become the first country that will be completely oil free.

That is amzaing. Ive just started to see alot of geothermal heating being used in large condo complexes now here in canada. Harnessing all of this free energy into something valuable is amazing. Really have started looking into. growing a few acres of sugar beats, or something else at home, and converting a couple motorcycles to run on ethanol. Im working on my first reflux still. Im retrofitting an old camper I have so it can be moved and used as a mobile still set.

So say I was to have a 1" take off tube reduced immediately to 3/4" should my reflux centering ring be 1" or 3/4". petty sure 3/4" but thought id check with you guys befor i waste time.

Also I am assuming the plate is to be installed perpendicualr to the flow????

thanks for help with these newbie questions.....

The way i did it was to have 1" through the valve and to the 90 bend, reduced to 3/4" right after the bend.

My reflux sentering ring had a 1" opening, same as the outlet.

reduced to 3/4" right after the bend.

3/4 or 3/8?

Says 3/8" on the diagram.

well heres a little trick i just figured out. Hope it can help someone else.

to creact the reflux centering plate easily, and to get it in the right position, take a 2"copper "test cap" they are cheaper than the ordinary end caps, and easier to work with. take that, and solder it onto the bottem of youre reflux head. now drill appropriate diameter hole in test cap. now take a file and file the end of it down so it will fit into your copper "t". this may take a fair bit of filing depending on your soldering skills. it will end up being quite a tight fit, but i just took a couple of pieces of wood and a hammer, then placed wood on each end to protect the copper, and hammered it in.

this will give you a reflux centering ring exactly where you want it.

hopefully this helps, not to mention works!!!!
