DIY spiral-prismatic packing

Post by kol2nas »

Here is a DIY of spiral-prismatic packing that Odessit mentioned in his post http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... g&start=15

A photo is worth a thousand words so:
A simple bench

Mandril

How it looks when done

By changing the form of mandril, different forms of packing can be achieved.

Measurements for the optimal performance must be:
diameter of packing 1/10 to 1/12 diameter of column
diameter of SS wire 1/10 diameter of packing

Pictures were taken from the forum of like-minded people in Russia

Very cool. How long did it take to manufacture that bottle of packing?

If using hand scissors then about two weeks two hours a day :)
But you can construct another simple bench to automatize that work a bit.

Haven't heard of any e-store providing them. Only a few Russian folks who sell directly.

Very cool, I wished that link in Russia had an English translation. I would have liked to read the comments.

Very cool, but why not use copper wire?

@ Washashore,

You beat me to the Keyboard. Asking the copper wire question was also my question to manu de hanoi.

hi,
Copper is expensive here in VN (but stainless steel is cheap) that's one reason,
other reason is that copper corrodes and that given the expense of making SPP, you may not want that
other reason is that copper is soft and that it prolly wouldn't stand the tension at a similar thickness - I'm using one of the thinnest possible wire gauge.
I put some copper foil in the columns, that doesnt mean all the column has to be made of copper.

However if you google around you'll find that some people can use copper for SPP.

Most aviation lock wire has iron. It is mostly nickle with some copper.
I had the same thought but checked my stash to see.

You can read it using Google translate. Here is a translation of the first post on the page cited, which is page 4 of the thread:

When you worked at a small pottery and firing it, so purely for fun decided to try to create one clay beads for packing. Took coriander seeds (They are ideal balls) and covered with a layer of clay, the method drazhzhirovaniya seeds. Catal blocked until a diameter of 5-6mm, the last portion of the clay added starch to obtain a porous surface (starch during firing fading). After drying, fell asleep in a thick tin can and put it in the oven on the wood, put on a little more wood and set on fire. An hour later, oven burnt and that's what happened (How to insert a picture?) Filled with water exposed to the street stood in the water for almost a month, freezing razmerzaya but not soaked. Who house gas, the problems with the firing nor any.

Hey, it's really fun looking through this forum. It's http://www.HomeDistiller.ru" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow . If you have the Google Toolbar, just click on Translate. In fact, once you use Translate, everything that's in another language gets turned into English on subsequent uses.

Some aviation lock wire is annealed SS. There is a lot of fishing line that is hardened SS. But the best I found in quantity is SS mig welding wire. It comes in better sizes (.020-.036) and quantities at about $3 a pound.

A liter of "C" size SPP takes about 3.7 pounds of wire. A 2" x 30" column will take about 1.5 liters. A 3" x 30" column will take about 3.5 liters.

And I'd advise to make the SPP a bit more open. Easier drainage, higher possible energy input, more reflux, more SPP in its optimal working range. And some other benefits that go beyound this tread's goal & topic.
