I'd your running full reflux,you wouldn't need to remove past it, it will be obsolete anyway.

I made a run with the column yesterday. While the boil still surged, the extra vent holes in the parrot kept the hydrometer and output stable.
The surge is pretty dramatic, the bubbles will go from just under the sight glass to 3/4 of the way up or more, and the're 3" site glasses.
I did put a piece of stainless chain in the boiler this run, but it didn't help. After more reading on it, I probably shoulda used lava rock or something more porous.
