Is there a name for this type of reflux column?
I spotted this in a book, and it looks like it'd be pretty straightforward:
Just a 1/2 inch punch to make clean holes, and pass some 1/2 inch tubing through a few times, hook up the pump, and go. I guess that going in a cross/X pattern, rather than the straight parallels in the picture, would be far more effective.
It wouldn't be as efficient as a Boka, but I don't really want to go that neutral anyway, I'd just like to hit maybe 80-85 in a single run.
It also seems like maybe you could hang a basket from one of the pipes as well...

You could do a cross-flow condenser and get more bang for your buck.

It's impossible to get total reflux with any heat going into it.
Distilling at 110f and 75 torr.

A very antique design, if you want a CM still..there are better designs to look at.
Re: Is there a name for this type of reflux column?
If you pack some SS Scrubbie around the tubes, you might get 100% reflux.
But it is a tougher build than it looks and outdated.

+1 on what has been stated... That's pretty much the original hobby scale Cooling Management design from back in the 70's or 80's... They did both inline and crisscross tubes...
Re: Is there a name for this type of reflux column?
I always thought they looked like a bitch to build. But that was with the tubes hard plumbed straight into the liebig, an even worse design.

He said he doesn't want neutral, so 100% reflux is not needed. Like others said it's an inferior design, but for bumping up ABV for flavoured product it will work. You may get up to 80+% from a single run.

That's all I'm looking for, is 75-80%, maybe even less. Most of what I buy is ~65%.

You might consider building in a little extra functionality, just in case you decide to broaden your horizons later on. Or not. It's your still.

What R U buying? That's "cask strength" not what commercial distilleries sell (for the most part). I'm curious what and where you buy 130 proof liquor.raketemensch wrote:...Most of what I buy is ~65%...

I buy cask strength Bourbon from the store when I want something that has more than a few months on oak like 20 years. There are numerous company's that sell that high.

What store...??? Not available here in NY that I'm aware of... I spend a lot of time eyeballing the liquor store shelves but rarely purchase much of anything... To the point where I think some clerks get nervous, thinking I'm a liquor inspector... But, then again, it's been years since I looked at liquor distributor catalogs...pfshine wrote:I buy cask strength Bourbon from the store when I want something that has more than a few months on oak like 20 years. Total wine has many stores in alot of states. Both have numerous brands with cask strength. Perhaps it's a local or state laws that prohibit certain percentages.

So, yeah, I'm the king of fail posting this week. I'd like to say that Next Week Will Be Better, but the odds don't look good right now.

Rad, there are plenty of constitutional freindly states still left in the US. You gotta go further south of find them. You can buy 151 here in VA. You can get 190 Everclear across the border in the Republic of Maryland (not that they understand the constitution up there).
None the less to get on topic, what you usually "buy" (wherever the may be) has no bearing on what you make because you cut it to strength to drink anyway. Especially using a column. I know I certainly don't drink 95%!

We have 151 Rum and Everclear 190 proof here but no other cask strength flavored spirits that I am aware of...

don't go booze shopping often, but I've seen a few white whiskeys for sale at barrel proof. Even a couple kits that come with the little barrel to age it how you want. Mostly sends to be stuff from local micro distilleries.
