ChrisH 4" 6 Plate Flute Build

Post by chrish »

So I've been lurking around for awhile and wanted to take my stab at a plated flute build. I'm just about done with the CAD work of setting this up. I've used inspiration from Dan and Kentucky Shinner's builds. There are still some details to be added, condenser plumbing, bottom plate turn-up from the downcomer, etc. I was able to basically get the open area I wished on each of my plates....28.8% open area utilizing a 0.125" diameter set of holes. The plate tree will utilize SS threaded rod with nuts locking each plate in place and be removable. Any feedback is welcome.

Your diagrams look pretty cool but 28.8% open area seem rediculously high . Not sure where you got this figure from . IIRC when I made mine I looked at many hole size / counts that others had used and typically tbey ranged from around 5 -10% open area .
I'm also curious why you want 6 plates . Most have found 3-4 to be the preferred amount for a flavoured spirit with 5-6 good for a nutral with a packed section .
Also most have found that 5" spacing is better than 4" spacing as it allows you to run a bit harder without entrainment .
Good luck with the build

- Maybe I've not read the most recent on a 5-10% open, what I've read on here has stated that work on getting close to 30% open area.
- As you stated 5-6 plates for neurtral spirits and 3-4 plates for flavored spirits. Notice I am giving myself the flexibility to remove plates to do either spirit.
- As for spacing, I am open to that, my initial readings show somewhere between 4" - 5".

I am taking all feedback prior to actually cutting copper!

I recently did a bunch of plates, just over 200 holes with #50 drill. They will handle 6000w. I have a few to sell if you need them.

"Most recent on a 5-10% open" this has been the norm for as long as OD has started the Flute thread, not saying a (28.8) 30% open area wont work but you will need to really pump the power up that column to keep it humming along, and be a bit violent action on the plates for a small spacing of the plates.
OD has since retired from the hobby so his feed back is only available in his writings, there are many ways to make a plated column but only a few ways that will work, with the expections of the purity, cleanliness, abv, power usage, and all other considerations! The plated columns have a sweet spot just as any stillhead and if to many variables are not meshing you will be chasing a ghost for a very long time.

Not responding in this thread to say right or wrong, just wanting you to understand the "plate cloumn" workings Cheers and good luck
It is what you make it

Well, I've made some headway on the project. I opted for going with a 4 plate column, completed the deflagmator and shot gun condenser. I couldn't be happier with the results. I still need to do some exterior finishing on some pieces then onto building the electric control module for the system.

Finally got everything together and going to make a vinegar cleaning run, then a sacrificial run, then onto business. Thanks for all the inspiration and information from the many members on this site.

Impressive.

Now, you need a caster wheeled stainless base. The 2x4's look out of place there.
