Glass Vodka Stills

Hey all,

I just got back from a trip to Maui Hawaii and visited a distillery called Haliimaile Distilling company. They do tours of their distillery which is very brief and then tasting of their products. They make a Vodka from pineapple juice (seems like a waste) as they own their own pineapple plantation.

The interesting thing is the distiller, who came from Colorado, designed his own glass still for making vodka. They said it is the biggest glass still in use in the world today. Here are some pictures of it.

He uses stainless steel for the column packing and only has copper in the little hose the distillate comes out of.

They also make Rum using this still setup. These stainless steel babies have copper mesh in the column. They make the run using Torbinado sugar that was sourced directly from the sugar company on the Island. The sugar mill closed down in December so they are working on what they have left before they will have to find a new source from Louisina or somewhere in that area. The Maui sugar we tasted at the distillery was very good. They are the Distillers that make Sammy Hagar's Beach Bum Rum. He even signed their tank as you can see in the picture below.

Have to admire the glass work on the stills.

The Stills were made by a German glass company and then shipped to Maui in pieces and then they put them together. They said the glass is a Borosilicate Glass and made to not break easily.
