Re: My CCVM build
Thanks!
I used Lucas-Milhaupt handy flux past and sil-fos 45 with a mapp gas torch.
It went reasonably well for my first time brazing.
It helped to have some one turn the piece as the braze was happening.
I have 16 gallons of birdwatchers started, cant wait to do my first sacrificial run!

Re: My CCVM build
Here is a video of the still running.
https://youtu.be/KYZUiHw79vY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
This is a mashup video of the first two runs.
On the first run I was dumbfounded as to why I wasnt getting azeotrope as I was sure azeo (mistakenly) was 195 proof, mixing up 95.5% ABV and 191 proof wrongly thinking 195 proof was azeo. When my alcohol meter showed 191 and not 195 I was disappointed and spent an hour messing with the reflux ratio and turning the heat up/down nothing I did had an effect on the meter it stayed pegged at 191 proof for the full hour of messing around. A quick google search on azeotrope of ethanol solved my problem. The alcohol meter wasn't moving because I was hitting azeo already and had been from the very start!
You will see in the video a rookie error, on my second run I had over charged my boiler and just like mercury in a thermometer it filled the column to the top of the packing you can see the birdwatchers boiling at the top of the SPP with the reddish tinge of tomato. When I realized my error I turned it off and let the whole package cool after 3 hours I was able to unload 1 gallon of wash dump and clean all the packing and start all over again.
I have since changed out fittings from the hose clamps to quick couplers this makes the whole set up alot easier to put together and take apart.
The propane burner is a 60,000 BTU model I already had and I run it full blast to warm up then cut back to what I guess is 50%ish, so just a quick guess on the equivalent wattage that might be is anywhere from 6k to 8k watts.
I find azeo to not be a very pleasant drink, but I have since cut it down to 126 proof dropped in clean un-toasted white oak and let age. The results turn out to be what smells and taste like very smooth fiery rye whiskey, and all who have partaken have enjoyed it. By taking all heads off and with a very clean hearts cut this drink is VERY smooth after 8-10 weeks on the oak and tastes of vanilla with some sweetness followed by heat as it goes down.
All in all I am super happy with this build. This was only made possible with the help and knowledge of all the fine folks on this site!

Re: My CCVM build
Good report! It is good to share your mistakes so that others can learn without making the same mistakes. I do not call them mistakes, I call them learning opportunities. Store bought alcohol here is usually between 37 and 43% ABV. If you dilute to those concentrations you will find the spirit even more tasty and even less firey. High ABV can mask flavours.

Re: My CCVM build

Re: My CCVM build
Boozewaves, the sight glass really comes in handy for seeing your reflux and where your condenser coil is in relation to your packing. Also handy for seeing if your column is flooding
The parrot is a nice addition, I had some time and lots of 1\2" copper kicking around and banged it off in a hour or so. One mistake I made with my parrot is I measured the length of my proof/tralle added 1/2" and thought that would be good. I wish now I had added 1 full inch instead as you want to put some stainless scrubby at the bottom to protect the meter from bottoming out and I couldnt as my parrot wasnt tall enough.
Good luck Brother it is exciting times when you first fire it it!
