I bought a 10 gallon corny keg at the recyclers a while back, (five bucks, I couldnt pass it up), and decided to make a boiler out of it. I have a 7.5 G. keg and a 15 G. keg (witch I have never used, the 7.5 has served me well).
Anyway, I had purchased a 2" tri-clamp fitting ($7.00 at St. Pats) so as to have the distillation device of choice fit all boilers.
First order of business was to prep the cornie 'lid'. This turned out a LOT easier than I expected. A NEW hacksaw blade works wonders.
Ive discovered that all of these cornie 'lids' are not the same, the one I modified had the safety blowoff valve located inside the 2" diameter hole for the tri fitting, so no patching was needed there.
Cut off the safety housing, drill a hole large enough to fit the hacksaw blade through, and started cutting out 'wedges' of metal down to the layout line, then out came the die grinder and then a 'half round' file to fine tune the hole.
Made a simple jig to keep things aligned for welding a few 'tacks' to hold the lid and fitting together, and then I welded them on the inside for a cleaner weld on the inside.
Then, another jig to hold the lid assy. in the right position on the keg, several tacks and then weld the lid to the keg.
There are 2 fittings on the top (on all kegs Ive seen, anyway, I assume they all have these 2 fittings), of the keg, and I discovered they are metal to metal sealed, so, I will remove the guts (plastic / rubber parts, and springs) and weld or silver solder the top shut, rather than welding the threaded fitting on the keg shut.
It was actually a lot easier to do than I thought, Ive been kickin' that keg for months and finally did the deed this week. Anyways, I thought someone might be interested. -hey-
