Brazing copper

Aside from stills, much equipment is involved in the process of distillation.

Brazing copper

Postby freespirited » Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:00 pm

I was looking at purchasing a large compressed gas tank for another project. It is supposed to be an oxygen tank due to dimensions. However it is a hydrogen tank and it is half full. Can I use the rest of what is in there for brazing copper parts together instead of using acetylene? From what I have read you would use it for brazing aluminum but I wouldnt need it for that. Also does anyone know if a hydrogen tank is the same as an oxygen tank as far as wall thickness? TIA

I would be surprised if you couldn't use hydrogen to braze copper. Aluminum takes much higher temperatures. You will most likely need torch tips specifically for hydrogen though. IYou cant use propane or natural gas tips for acetylene so I wouldn't use acetylene tips with hydrogen. As far as wall thickness on the bottles I'm not sure. Both gasses are typically at around 3000 psi when the bottles are full so I'm guessing the thickness would be close if not the same.

The only time I have seen hydro tourches, the flame produced was not a tight little blast flame like Oxy-ACC. It was a large flappy flame. It is SUPER hot, but they were not very controlled. It is often used for gold 'melting' after the gold has been chemically refined into 24K gold 'powder dust'.

They may make different torch heads for hydro. I really do not know. But from what I have seen, in no way would I use that for brazing.

You could use it to make a weather balloon using a garbage bag and some aluminum foil 8) the kids will love it.

That is true but isnt hydrogen very explosive? From what I read anything electrical in the area can make it ignite. Guess I could save it for the 4th and shoot the balloons/trash bags.

Those trash bags can generate static electricity, which is a bad combination with hydrogen.

Just a thought...

Don't be building another Hindimburg. Or how ever you spell it.

Hydrogen is a fuel so I would think the valve would be different then oxy. And I bet they wouldn't fill it anyway. Residual fuel and oxy wouldn't mix. Just a thought. But you mite be able to trade it.

I talked to them about trading it. They would have if I pushed the issue. I didnt really bother since I just need an empty tank and figured maybe I could put the fuel to use. I am making a replica cannon, that shoots bowling balls.

oxy hydrogen torches are used by divers for underwater cutting. You should try it carefully with any torches you have to see what kind of flame you get. Start very small flow and only turn it up slowly in stages. You might find you have a useful fuel source. Bit of a crime to waste good fuel.
