How much recirculation water?

Aside from stills, much equipment is involved in the process of distillation.

How much recirculation water?

Postby MisterSteve124 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 6:42 pm

I am starting to build my new bokabob and I am trying to decide if I was to use tap water and just run the output down the drain or if it is feasible to use recirculating water. I know that I will need a lot of water for this to be possible, but would I need more than a 55 gallon drum or a large trashcan full? And if I wanted to keep the water for a period of time to conserve water do you think I would need to add any chemicals to keep it from growing algae or anything like that, even though it will be inside? I know some of this depends on how fast my pump is pushing the water through but I am just looking at ballpark figures here

I'm no expert... but my big ass Walmart trashcan does fine on a 15.5 gal run w/3" brewhouse. I add 2 milk jugs of ice if my water gets warm. (Though I know some hear don't like using ice, works for me). Saves water. I've thought of using chemicals in it to keep it clean and for sanitizing utensils/siphon hose but haven't decided what to use yet..

Yes a garbage can works fine with a pump, in the summer I also use the gallon ice jugs to help keep it cool longer. You might have to run some of the water into another container and refill during the entire run if your water temp rises to much. I check the water periodically throughout the run to keep a constant temp.

I run my 2" pot & Liebig on a 55 gallon drum of water. 138 GPH pump, 1/2" lines
Water is pulled from the bottom of the barrel and dumped back in the top.
I toss a hot tub tablet (Bromine) in the barrel when I fill it and change the water about 5 times a year.
Water starts out about 55 to 60 degrees and ends at about 90 on a full 14 gallon run
