Re: Copper Kettle
With lead solder would be my guess . If it has a wired rim the core of the roll is probably steel or galvanized steel wire .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .

here is a pic. I had planned to use it for a sink in a log house but I hate to waste copper.

Re: Copper Kettle
From what I can see there may be solder? If so I would check it with a lead test kit that you can pick up at just about any hardware store. If it's brazed or welded you should be good.

Re: Copper Kettle
It isn't soft like solder. Maybe silver soldered but being that its as old as it is I was unsure..

Re: Copper Kettle
I would test it for lead just to be safe because of the age. It would be a shame for that much copper to be a sink! If it test lead that would make a great sink.

Re: Copper Kettle
I went to Walmart and they didn't have a test kit so Ill try Lowes tomorrow. Thanks for pointing out the test kit..

Re: Copper Kettle
I tested it for lead and everything looks good. I guess it's time to shine it up and put it to good use

Wow! Welcome! A thread returned from the dead. Grrreat still. Did you need 3 years for that?

I actually only have about 3 days in it so far. I never have time to work on my own stuff. Its like a paint and body guy that always paints everyones car but his own.der wo wrote:Wow! Welcome! A thread returned from the dead. Grrreat still. Did you need 3 years for that?

Re: Copper Kettle
I got the boiler finished and decided to wrap it in Cypress that I had left over from a canoe. I still have to make the openings to access the elements and the drain that will come out of the front and tons of finishing but its starting to come together. Im out of time for now so it will have to sit for 5 more weeks which will be my next days off.

Re: Copper Kettle
I am impressed...!
You did some damned fine handyman work there...congrats to finally finishing your still.
It's not every day we see a 8 plater with a copper dome and such nice woodwork.
Hmmm...makes my enclosure on my boiler look very humble (I plan to put some wood around it and insulate).
Speaking of insulation...are you planning to use something like Rockwool or just foam it up in there..?
The handles will be cut off your boiler I assume..?
