How 'bout this for a wash pump?

Post by raketemensch »

The racking cane has become untenable due to the setup I've got going now, my fermenters are huge and below the height of my boiler. I need a pump, but can't really shell out for something at the Wayne price level.

Any thoughts on this?

I was also thinking about picking up one of those drill-drive pumps and rigging up an old motor that I've got laying around, but then I read that they create grease issues. This may as well, I'm not sure.

We've got literally dozens of threads about wash pumps, but none of them really seem to reach a conclusion beyond "buy a Wayne."
Edit: Now I'm thinking about one of these with a 12v wall wart:

Why can't you use a cheap submersible pump? Wash is pretty thin and no need for it to sit on bottom right?

I use a small $20 submersible pond pump from Lowes that works great. I wrapped it with a 1 gallon paint strainer bag to keep the big chunks out.

Better rethink that. Works out to roughly 1/2 gallon per minute.
Blah, blah, blah,........

Well, I've already got one of those, but I didn't think submerging it in wash was a good idea. If folks are doing that, then I'm all set.

I like the paint bag idea, too, I've got a few of those around already too.

Thanks everyone. HD ftw.

(Not having "actually" done it before)
- I'd say: just make sure that after use, it is submerged in some sanitizing solution. Then, if stored for a while, sanitize and rinse before reusing it to be sure it isn't harboring some Ebola (or H1-N1 or the like :)

We think alike, I was picturing dropping the pump in some OxiClean before and after use. I found my paint stirrer bags this afternoon, now I just need time for another run...

2 gallons per minute is pretty lame. OP has huge fermenters.

Then he just needs to spend the money and get a march pump or chugger pump and be done with it. And quit trying make some garbage work.

Her's my pump.Mag drive. I can fight a fire with this thing. 13 foot head.

Sucks a 20 gallon tub dry in seconds as well as running the RC & PC.

An axial flow pump could be improvised with PVC and an impeller/small electric motor. Get a lot of volume movement and easy to sanitize (just a thought).
