SS scrubbers vs SS wool.

Post by Rennsman »

I've had a bit of a search on stainless steel packing in regards to scrubbers VS wool, but have not been able to come up with much.

I was wondering if anyone has tried both or compared their performance or HETP.

To avoid confusion, I view these as Scrubbers.

And this as stainless steel wool, the type that comes on a reel.

It seems the scrubbers are normally what is used, but I was curious about the wool.

From what I've read, the stainless wool can be packed too densely and severely inhibit vapor flow.
That won't happen with scrubbers.

Based on the recent thread comparing hetp of different packing, scrubbies make a cheap and easy to get packing with one of the best hetp's. I would guess any difference is small since scrubbies tested the best of marbles, lava rack and rings. Unless you have some ss wool, I would just head to Walmart and get scrubbies.

.

Strangely, the stores around here are always low on scrubby inventory ....

Thanks for the response, looks like scrubbers it is.

The packing test of scrubbers, rings and lava rock was great.

Looks like I'll be getting a 100 pack of 50 gram scrubbers on Ebay, might need to fill 3" by 48-60" and maybe a few left to scrub some pans.

Rennsman .... nice thread with clear pics of what you are talking about
SS scrubbbers when you buy them seem to nicely fit up a 2" clacka quite nicely
For bigger diameter than this .... and I see you have a 3" , you might like to "tease" them out a bit to the larger diameter before inserting so that you get an even packing . And don't be afraid to shove them in tight .... They like a firm stoking

Yummy, hadn't thought much about where you come from until I saw that slang.
