Newbie from Victoria

Postby lvannugt 01 » Mon Sep 11, 2017 2:54 am

Hi Guy's,New to this hobby or obsession :D
Got given a 50ltr SS Keg so i thought i might convert it to a still.
Been to KMart and got 2 kettles which plan to put the elements in 2000watts approx.each.
Have also got a 2" Copper pipe approx.1.4m tall (which was cheap) i will add tri clover fittings to it.
Planning to cut the top to add the 4" tri clover fitting and running a reducer to the 2" pipe.
Also planning to put in a 1/2" valve tap at the front

i will need some ideas/help what design for the condenser or overall design from you seasoned Distill Warriors.

Cheers thx in advance

Welcome in Ivan.
Nice score on the keg, it will serve you well, many here run them and are delighted with em.

if I was to redo my keg I'd flip it 180 ,use the 2" as a drain and then put a 6" hole in the top and then reduce as required.

start a build thread with your intentions and I'm sure you get plenty of info, help input on your plan.

for all the reading i've done here and there...this is the first time i've seen this advise and damn, that's a great idea!

Welcome in Ivan, hope you enjoy the place. Head on over and start a thread in the construction area and we can all go along for the ride!

G'day neighbor welcome to the forum.
What type of product you want will determine the best still to build first. We try to reserve in depth questions and advise of new members to to novice section but what are ya looking to make?

Hello again,

What general area in Victoria?

I'm about 20 km S of the big river, in North Central Victoria.

Tried to google that fence without a lot of success.
More about the Western Australian one.
I hadn't heard about it before.

Yeah, there is not much about the actual fence.
I used to live around Mildura and I remember all those ferries on the road to Adelaide.

Welcome aboard! Lots and lots of great info here! Like the guys said, what you want to drink will dictate the type of still you should build. My advice, have patience!

Lol, Which car is the best? Which whiskey is the best? Heck, which type of whiskey is best?
:)
I guess the best short answer is as tall as possible without going through the roof or being so tall as to be wasteful or impractical. And whichever condenser best matches what you can put into it and demand out of it.

Start the questions in the novice section and you will get ample advise and pointers but in short those two products are best done with two completely different approaches with either two different stills of one of several designs that can be ran in different configurations but the discussion of them is beyond the excepted scope of a welcome thread and is best suited to the novice sub forum
