Hello! I'm new
Hi just getting into distillation and have built a still. Still waiting on some parts for electric heating, thermometers and what not. It is a work in progress. Need to clean and sand, polish the boiler. Cleaning and fitting the parts that I have ordered. Just thought I would say Hi and introduce myself (of Sorts) so hi all.

Re: Hello! I'm new
I'm curious about your still design --only from my ignorance, not yours.
There's no control over column water temperature with the condenser water going through it.
Can you enlighten me on operation, please?
And Welcome to you.

I'm with Still Life on that one, curious on how that works with the water traveling through the vapor path??

Re: Hello! I'm new
It's a reflux column. It works by condensing water within the vapour back down so more ethanol is concentrated. Useful for high purity but not good for flavour. Just strips everything out but the ethanol. The water temp is regulated separately. Like I said it's a work in progress. Only just started building it.
Re: Hello! I'm new
It's an older design - more akin to running a post still with thumper than genuine reflux. But hey, my first still was almost identical and they work well enough.
A CCVM would have been a far easier build and work better at getting a more neutral product (if that's what you're after).
Welcome aboard!

My father is a heating engineer. I got him to build it. So was very easy for me. I look forward to trying it. And as I get into it. Try new and different builds.
