Hello from Nova Scotia

Post by Sunflash »

Hi all,

New here and just getting into distilling. Bought a 25L stainless CM still with a short water jacket reflux column and shotgun condenser.

The whole set up works pretty well I did 3 x 25l washes, and got about 7L of hearts from 85%-75% - but I realize now that I was running as a pot still, with out proper cooling management of the column.

Looking to learn lots

Cheers

Hey how ya doin?
Pot still mode is how I primarily use my CM still.
You'll find your niche with some practice.
Wish you success!
Welcome.

Thanks. Is a standard 3/8 " ball valve enough to control cooling to the water jacket if I am trying to get some reflux going?

Thanks - we are not big drinkers but we make wine and beer and I thought that learning distilling will be a another good skill to add to my zombie apocalypse survival skillset.

Welcome, my neighbours laugh when I give them that reason for the hobby, but we'll see who's laughing when it happens. At least as Canadians we can rest assured the zombies will be frozen half the year.

Sorry if this was addressed to me, mcgugrah. Didn't see it.
You'll find most CM'ers recommend a needle valve to finesse the flow.

But I've got a stock ball valve myself that came with the still. I've got either luck or a magic touch because I can get 95% alcohol out of my still if I try.

Practice with yours and see.
