Hello from Montreal, Canada
Hi, I have been lurking and learning for at least a year now. Finally made my pot still.
A 15.5gal stainless keg with a 12” riser 2” diameter(copper)with reduction down to 1/2” and 3’ of 3/4 jacket for liebeg condenser.
Heated by propane.
I have been an all grain brewer for 4 years now.
Will be making whiskey, rye and some experimental mashes with blends of smoked rye wheat and barley.
This website has provided me with everything I need.
I have joined now to post some questions about my first run.
It was a success! But upon tear down and cleaning I found a strange metalic rainbow film like substance inside the top of the riser. Pics to come soon in the proper forum.

Welcome from another Canadian.
You don't say so I have to ask... Did you do a proper cleaning/sacrificial run before you started? If not, you could have all kinds of nasties on the inside surface of your pot still. Rainbow effect sounds like oil which should have been cleared out.

Re: Hello from Montreal, Canada
I was thinking my cleaning run wasn’t very good also. Let’s review...
I pushed steam through it for I think 30 mins and then added vinegar(50% ratio with water) for another 30 mins.
No condenser just lots of steam out the condenser.
The sacrificial run was a bit(2gal)of my whiskey wash and it was very cloudy.
Wash was all grain with some peat smoked grains, could there have been some oily smoke substance on that?
11lbs of smoked grains
Keg was clean but I may have a small layer of beer stone on the bottom.
(i also make beer in same keg)
Beer stone builds up slowly and is hard to see, hmmmmmm
An alcoholic substance could interact with the beer stone proteins???
There is another lunch time research project.
I also Used a large amount of flour paste to seal the 1/8” gap at the top of my stainless keg lid.
The past worked better than the hot dog buns I used in the cleaning run.
I don’t think lasagna pasta noodles could be better?

Here is the bottom of the riser(ferrule?) where it clamps to the keg lid.
I should probably get this into the proper forum but you asked for a pic.

That could well be where your discolouration is coming from..Greggle2000 wrote:Wash was all grain with some peat smoked grains, could there have been some oily smoke substance on that?

As for your seal, make a gasket using mat board and wrapped with teflon tape..

Mat board is what is used around a picture within the frame.. you can get pieces from frame makers..The Baker wrote:I am thinking of doing this but what is mat board?
