Hello from South East Kansas
I'm new to distilling and this looked like a great place to start. I have made wine a few times and beer off and on for years.
I got a 5 gallon pot still from Clawhammer Supplies.
I have it put together and have ran a vinegar salutation in it. I have also ran straight water and looks like I'm ready as far as the still goes.
Now to figure out what the first batch will be.

Welcome to HD,
it's a great place to learn, I always recommend the All-Bran recipe for beginners,( http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =14&t=9981 ) it's easy, fast and ready to drink right off the still but anything in tried and true is good.

After your vinegar run, a sacrificial alcohol run is recommended. Make a simple sugar wash, ferment it and run it through your still. Do NOT drink it. Use it for shop solvent or pitch it. This gets the guts of your fixins cleared out. A side benefit is you also observe how a wash/ferment works, and the particulars of your equipment.
When I was a boy, I prayed for a bicycle. I soon learned G~d doesn't work like this so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

Welcome fellow Midwesterner. Take your time, read a lot and enjoy the craft. I’m quite new myself and have spent way more time reading then running but the effort was priceless. I,m now armed with the confidence and a good knowledge base to safely and effectively run my still. I know you are excited as I was to get started but make sure you read a lot and the experience will be more fruitful. Just be safe
