A silly mistake to make. . . . .

Post by Doddsie »

God I feel stupid now!!!!.

I've just added my all my sugar (10 Kg) to start my wash and decided to stick my thermometer in to read the temp of the water and yes you've guessed it the thermometer blew it's head off whilst in the water. All the RED fluid went into the mix, some I was able to scoop up of the surface but I'm not too sure I got the lot.

My question is does anybody know what the red fluid is made up of in chemical turns and if so could I then run the mix through the still without poisoning everyone????.

Thanks again from a very embarrassed Doddsie

Wax usually. Just saw an episode on The History Channel's "How it's Made" about thermometers. Should be NO toxic chemicals in it AFAIK.
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
Modified Charles 803 w/ 50gal boiler, never ran so far.

Here in Europe they are filled with alcohol (red). In the earlier days they used mercury (silver) but because it is toxic, they started using alcohol.

Add some strawberries and call it Strawberry pantie dropper. ( not sure about the spelling of pantie/y)
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Cumudgeon and loving it.
