Transporting a grain mash

Postby alyeomans » Thu Apr 12, 2012 3:56 pm

Circumstances have meant that my wife will not let me distil at home. But all is not lost as I can distil at work where my boss is understanding and is happy to tax the output.

I can handle sugar washes by fermenting at work but grain washes have the problem where I cannot lauter at work and it is purely a home job due to equipment etc.

So i need to transport my mash on a 40 minute drive but at what stage should this be done: once i've lautered, once it has finished fermenting or once in the secondary bucket?

I was thinking that once fermented the staling from oxidization is not an issue if I distil soon after transport.

Hoping for some comments on this.

Thanks
Al

Once it's finished and ready to distil. May as well do as much as you can in your comfort zone. Maybe use a plastic carboy filled up to lessen the sloshing. Or those good buckets with the snap tight lids. That's what I'd do. Also, you might get a better taxation rate than if you do it all at work

Great ideas all round and would love a man cave. Just checked Rad no exchange wife ads.

If all else fails I have a couple of 20 litre distilled water containers with lids that will be good.

The wife won't let me distill at home yet either.
Suits me fine cause I work away from home for weeks at a time. I use my motor home for work and distilling. After all, it's a recreation vehicle right? :D

So transport was successful. Ended up with 17L in each container so topped up the remaining 3L with tap water.

As the lids were on there was a bit of pressure build up from residual fermentation and forced some wash out the tap and seal so I now have a nice sour malty smell inhabiting the car.

Am happy as they stripped to 8 litres at 40%.

So to confirm. You simply added tap water to top off your for transport. Adding the water meant a longer burn time but with no other malfunctions...Thanks for the post. Always wondered about this topic. Have a "friend" a ways away. Ready to go now! :D

Hi Gowiththeflow

Yes, just topped off with tap water so it would not slosh around in the top of the container. To strip, my pot still will output at 4 litres per hour at full blast so the extra water did not affect the time much. As it was only stripping I was not concerned with cuts, so yes all went as expected.

The only thing to watch is residual fermentation pressuring the sealed container and forcing the wort out.
