beano-digestive enzyme test

i have been reading around and seen people chatting about using digestive enzymes in mashing.
found that curios so i gave it a try.
a bottle of pills was 7.00
i purchased one pound of cornstarch.
i was not shure how thick it would get so i put 2 gallons of water for one pound of starch.
heat the water to 190f added the starch and mixed well.
let it sit for an hour or so.
i could have let it sit longer and added more starch but success would be getting any conversion for me
after one hour i cooled it to 154and added 3 pills worth and mixed.
i was supprised how fast it thinned out.
i left it for 30 minutes.i don`have iodine so i cooled some and tested the mash with a hydrometer.
hmmm......i had a reading of 1.025.
i thought that wasn`t bad for two gallons of water and a pound of starch.
sooooo.has anyone else ever tried this and how did it turn out
amylase is impossible to get here and shipping from the u.s is getting pricey
figured i`d try it and if it would work

just a quick follow up.
it was not beano i used it was digestive enzyme pills from walmart.
on the ingredient list alpha amylase was one of the listed ingrdients.
seemed to have worked.
they were called webber digestive enzymes pills

so are these the same amylase as what you buy at the brew shop????????
i saw the ones fuelmaker was talking about.
the ones i tried thinned out 1pound to 1 gallon water on a second trial.
i used half a pill.

Yeah, pretty much - with a bunch of other stuff thrown in too. A full starch conversion contains alpha and beta amylase (different places they cleave starch) you need both for a full conversion. The pills dont say alpha or beta or both. Enzyme conversion is a huge subject and you'll need many ours of reading to cover it.

i usually malt barley for conversion.i malt my own.

Beano is only alpha amylase, using malted grains contributes beta and each are more functional at different temperatures between 150-140 F

Funny this should pop up again. I just found and bought this at my local Fred Meyers store. It was something like $13.00. I figure a crushed-up pill or two during the initial cook will keep things thinned out, there's enough varied enzymes in it to break down anything protein or starch.
