difference between using corn sugar and corn
the guy at my local brew shop said there is not much difference between corn sugar and flaked corn . was wondering what you guys thought on this ?
Re: difference between using corn sugar and corn
Corn sugar is, well, sugar... Flaked corn is, well, corn... Corn is mainly starch and that starch needs to be converted into sugar using enzymes - unless raw corn kernels are malted... So the guy at the brew shop wasn't really telling the truth, but probably doesn't know any better... He's just a sales idiot just like in most any other store and will say what you want to hear in order to make a sale... I never listen to anyone in stores and decline help at all cost... If I have to ask someone where something is and they have to hunt around for it I might as well hunt all by myself... And I can read the labels just as easily as they can, and most likely better...

Re: difference between using corn sugar and corn
I wonder if "corn sugar" is what they make "High fructose corn syrup" out of ?
RAd is right of course - sugar is sugar, corn is (maize ?)
It's a bit like saying "Cane sugar is the same as sugar cane..." - well is it ?
I'm getting a little frustrated with this new world where it seems ok to "tell 'em any old bullshit"

While I can't imagine what he was thinking it does make me curious as to ... what was your question that generated that response ?

i was asking if i could use corn sugar instead of flaked corn
Re: difference between using corn sugar and corn
While that wasn't the actual question originally asked, the answer is yes if you are working on a sugarhead wash... What is the recipe in question...??? Knowing as many details as possible will yield far better answers than an ambiguous question like in your first post...thepiper wrote:i was asking if i could use corn sugar instead of flaked corn

While you can probably substitute from a sugar/alcohol standpoint, you won't get the same taste.
