Malted Barley Source

Post by liqrlkr »

Good Morning, I have had a hard time finding a good source for malted barley, ebay has 2 pounds for $12 which I think is pretty steep.
Where have you folks found a good place to purchase it on the internet. I have tried some beer brewers in the area and no one seems to have malted barley. Thanks!

Where you at, liqrlkr?
Homebrew shops are best, barley malts less that a buck a pound.
Other malts not much more, I just picked up 50# oat malt for $66.

Otherwise mail order, like SP's link. Easy ordering, quick shipping, fresh product, huge selection.
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me...

Wow, really? I've never seen oat malt. All the brew shops around me only have flaked oats, and I can't think of a good reason a beer brewer would need malt oat over flaked oat. At least not one to give the shop keep

Perhaps an extra bag gets left in your van when you show up in West Virginia...

Thanks for all the replys, I guess I am confused about the malted barley, isn't there a difference between MALTED barley and barley MALT. I thought I read on this site that the barley needs to go through the malting process to create enzymes. So can barley MALT be used in place of MALTED barley. I am in Florida. I can find plenty of barley Malt.

Nope...two ways of saying the same thing.

Cheers.

A rose by any other name would convert just as nice.

It's the same buddy. If it has malt in the name, it's got (or had) enzymes. In some places, it's not even referred to as barley. It will just say Malt ( ie, Pilsner malt, golden promise, 2 row malt). It's all barley. It's the wheat and rye that's goofy  .

Only thing that won't work is anything crystal (cooked after malting), flaked, or anything specifically stated as unmalted.

Just ask your shop keep to get you some "base 2 row". You'll get the right stuff.

You guys are great! That makes my life much easier. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't find what I was looking for when it was right in front of me all the time. I cooked my sugar wash this weekend and I will post the info on that in the proper forum. Thanks.

I would suggest first try your local homebrew shop if you have one. most of them have minimal markup to cover shipping costs since they buy in good bulk quantities.

Next I would second using Midwest Supplies and/or Northern Brewer but with a catch....
I am on both of their mailing lists/email alerts, I regularly get notifications of free or next to free shipping specials:
If I put a bulk bag (50lbs) of malted grains in my shopping cart and then calculate shipping they always come back with a message that says bulk bags are exempt from the deal
Return to shopping and instead add 1 lb of whatever grain I want in the cart, remove the bulk bag and then up the count of the 1lb entry to 50 or 30 or whatever it is I need. Re-calculate shipping and find the free shipping deal is good.

I've done this multiple times and saved a TON on shipping on bulk grains, the only downside is having to wait until the next deal to come around.

Good Luck!

While I haven't found barley yet,
50# wheat $15
50# corn $6
Then malt them. Malting is easier if you plan to use green malt, but the grinding is challenging.

i grind all my grains green in a corona mill.
what i do is when they are malted enough i throw them in the freezer.
i malt everything in those white meal bags.
then when i need grain i take them out and being froze the first grind works not bad
for sure its slower then dry but if you grind in three shots and not go fast
you get the job done.
10 pound or so usually takes about 20 minutes
i use it for conversion only mostly
and being froze the roots will shrivel up.
usually the acrospire will stay green though.
anyhow,it works for me
