I will mash in a Irish Whisky mash in the next few days comprised of barley malt, pearled barley, a little corn and a little rolled oats (exact bill still in the works - suggestions?). I plan on grinding the grain in my hacked Corona mill, but are wondering if its really necessary to grind the rolled oats.
What say you?

Re: Rolled Oats
Other reading here in years past suggest that it is NOT necessary to crush the rolled oats. What makes them rolled Boda? How large is your grain bill? A can o'Quakers may work for you.

Re: Rolled Oats
if it's feed mill rolled, yes it needs more. if it's feed mill crimped you will do better but more milling would still be good. GAF's suggestions of a can of quaker's is prolly the best for no further milling. (i use a fair bit 'o the oats )
i used steel cut once, worked great but was expensive. i'd mill them just to maximize the yield for the price.

I finally quit drinking for good.

Re: Rolled Oats
Thanks Guys. I just picked up 50# rolled oats from Tractor Supply today; from my reading I believe the oats are first steamed, then rolled. I think my grain bill will be
35% Pearled Barley
35% Malted 2 row
15% Corn
15% Rolled Oats
I will do 30 gal ferments at 1.80ish #/gal and will grind all grain about coarse corn meal size. I plan to mash in pearled barley, corn and oats over night in insulated Big Brute , add 2 Row at 148F, do iodine test, them pitch bread yeast at 85F ish.
Plan to triple distill and age in used charred keg.
With my grain supply I hope to end up with around +- 4 gals of barrel entry 120-125 proof.
I've done lots of all grain Bourbons and Single Malts but this will be my first Irish Whiskey. I have a bottle of Red Breast and love it, hope to come close.
Any thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Re: Rolled Oats
Sounds like a really good mash bill
I wonder what flavor Pearled Barley brings
How different from raw barley or malted barley

Re: Rolled Oats
Sounds lovely Boda, much like my Irishish mash.
@Shady, I thought pearl barley was raw barley

Pearled barley is whole barley with the husk and bran removed. I've used it to make a nice vodka.
