First run 125 proof (i think)

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First run 125 proof (i think)

Post by Infinitebrainspace »

First batch of mash was 55 gallons... 75lbs cracked corn, 75lbs beet sugar, 30oz turbo yeast and store-bought distilled water (gave me about 35 gallons of beer). 8 days later ran it.
cooked 22 gallons of beer. used 30 gallon stainless pot still with a 1" x 24" column packed with copper scouring pad. 25ft worm inside garden hose for condenser.
brought liquid temp to 208, and column was at 205. never allowed water to boil.
36oz foreshots and 3 quarts of 125 proof shine.
The worm quit drippin' so I called it done.

I should mention that the worm looked like it had a prostate problem, because it would start and stop, start and stop... I think that had something to do with the packed column...

cooked the rest of the beer (15 gallons) same way.
22oz foreshots and 2 quarts of 125 proof. I dont think I got much tails (other than maybe some isopropyls). so I ended up with about 5 quarts of good shine.

I found a guy that use to run shine up from NC to give to his buddys (been doin' it for 50 years), and he said that my stuff was as good as it gets (for corn shine). That really flipped
my pride switch, and gave me incentive to continue this hobby (even though my wife don't like it).

My next run will be at 215 - 220 degrees, so I can get more hooch even if the ABV is lower. I'm shooting for 100 proof, and hoping for 5 - 6 gallons from 40 gallons of 17% ABV beer.
I don't know what to do with it since I don't drink much, and I sure as hell aint gonna sell it. Maybe I'll just keep it for sippin' with my neighbors.
the still is a bit different... 20 gallon with same type of column and worm, but electric instead of propane. also the next batch is using distillers yeast and softened well water.
My worm is not plugged, kinked, running up hill, or stuck in a cats ass.
although that last one might stop the gurgling noise...
