My First Run Ever...

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

My First Run Ever...

Post by bgrizzle »

Hello guys... so i just did my first run ever... i had 6 gallons of sugar wash that was made with 48hour turbo yeast. I collected 250ml of foreshots. I think I'm going to save it to clean the rims on my truck...

Then i collected 200ml more between the temperature range 166 to 167 degree f. I tested this at 84% ABV.

Then i got 3.6 Quarts of 93% ABV. The temperature at the top of the column settled in at 167.7 and I swear it only flucuated by 0.1 degree f for about 2.5 hours! I would collect 200-400ml at time and test...

Then i finally got into the tails... it was very obvious as the temperature finally started to rise. I saved the heads and tails for future runs.

Is this the way its supposed to go... Total it took me about 4 hours.

I used the milehi 2" column with 8 gallon milk jug. propane turkey fryer.

Also, any recommendations on carbon cleaning? Do you guys think i should carbon clean this stuff because i used the turbo yeast? I have yet to taste the stuff, but it seems pretty pure and no terrible odors at all... Thank you in advance.

I gotta admit this was almost as much fun as losing my virginity, but it took about 4,000 times longer!
