My First still

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

My First still

Post by Sedaterman »

Just finished my 5 gallon Clawhammer still. I had zero soldering experience but I made my way through it. I still have some excess solder to clean up, but I will take care of that after checking for vapor leaks (and I am certain to find some ) during my cleaning run.

Should I fill my still to capacity for the cleaning run ? How much vinegar do you guys recommend I add ?
Comment and criticisms are welcome

Thanks
Tom

i filled my half way with a 50 50 mix of vinger and water. then ran some old home made redwine. then just for good measure i did it again with some turbo ujssm. and yes anything turbo sucks balls. but it got her clean..

If you are just checking for leaks, run a hot water test first. If the still passes that, then do the vinegar/water run.

it may just look like it in the pic but that condencer looks pretty short, hope it works for ya, but i would keep an eye on vapors, whatch the water flow and dont overdo the heat.
today marks the dawn of a new error.

Thanks for the input. Going to wait for the weather to break before I try this thing out.

Sedaterman,

That is an awesome still. I hope you love it as much as I do. If you ever decide you need to find a new home for it, know that I would treat her right. ;)
