Made a simple still

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Made a simple still

Post by christopher »

I put this contraption together after reading up on safe materials I can use to make it. I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions. Just a stainless pot, mixing bowl, compression fitting, 20' copper tubing coiled in the basket there, and teflon tape for the seals. Did a cleaning run with vinegar and water and it was still leaking some steam, so I will need to use more clamps/tape or maybe add those paper holders I've seen people use. I'm surprised just how hot the condenser water got! Will need to replace the water often. I'm doing my sac run tonight followed by my main run tomorrow. Made a sugar wash with DADY yeast and some tomato paste. Been fermenting for a week. Wish me luck!

Your wife didn't slit your throat when you drilled that hole into the mixing bowl?

Funny you say that Bazil :) She was more upset that I went and got good materials for making moonshine (the stock pot was a bit on the expensive side, since I couldn't find a cheaper one that fit the bowl perfectly), yet I have given her a hard time for buying fancy pots and bowls. Now I owe her a nice stainless mixing bowl to replace her cheap plastic one :lol:

@Prairiepiss, it is 1/4" tubing.

Tubing is too small . Some flour paste and cotton string would probably fix your leak problem .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

Ok thanks, I will fix that!

Also why is it too small? Does more water end up coming through?

With 1/4" it's much easier for something to clog up the takeoff...say, a chunk of corn. Doesn't take much pressure for a KB.

Ok thanks for clearing that up.

Also I was able to fix the leaks by just adding paper clamps wherever steam started to leak.
