Mouse in the MASH - pitch the mouse or pitch the mash?

Post by varocketry »

Dammit Murphy's Law. I don't have clue how a mouse climbed up the sides of a stainless steel keg unless he climbed the heater power cord.

Probably only been there a day or so, he was still soft when I fished him out.

I've pitched the mouse, should I pitch the MASH, too? Or just rack it and run it?

I believe there is a tradition in cider making, of hanging some meat in the big vat.
Maybe a squirrel or something from the beast you cut up for the kitchen.
So a mouse would hardly signify and according to the tradition might be an improvement?!

Run it . My great uncle Roy and his buddies found a hog drowned in one of their likker boxes . Salvaged the hog and the ferment . Allowed that they was both tolerable . Folks today are just too squeamish . Google USDA standards to see the proportions of rats , mice , bird shit , bugs , and human parts they will allow in commercially processed foods you buy every week at the grocery store .

There's an old moonshiners trick to cooking rodents, possums and coons.
You start by
Marinating the critter in the mash barrel until the hair slips off easy.

I watched my Grammaw pull a drowned rat out of the butter churn once . She tole me not to worry none . She was gonna sell that butter to 'The Quality Folk' in town that she cleaned houses for . Weren't none of that run of butter gonna be on her table ........
She had a regular customer base of city folk that bought 'fresh from the farm' butter , eggs , and dressed chickens from her . I went to school with some of those Dr's and Professor's kids that joked about 'that old hick housekeeper' that brought them such 'special' food for such a stupid low price . I just smiled and kept my mouth shut .

Reminds me of the English, the Irish, and the Scot who each find a fly in their beer.
English says, "Ugh. Revolting. I'll have a new beer."
Irish fishes out the fly and drinks the beer anyway.
Scot grabs the fly by the wings, holds it up to his face and screams, "SPIT IT OUT YOU BASTARD!"

This is one of the reasons I love this place. We take a shitty situation, shine some light and humor on it, and wait for the delicious results of mouse shine.

A while back I posted that I found evidence that a mouse had gotten into my column packing. After each run I took apart my column to rinse it but hadn't pulled the packing for several years so I have no idea how many runs I did with the droppings. I did not notice a difference in taste but I now cover the ends of my column to keep those little buggers out.
