There, replaced the cup on the takeoff side and raised the collection cup up higher. Still some issues with trapped air at first but once it gets going it works like a hotdamn! Only burnt my thumb once this time. ETOH flows diffrent then water so I'm hoping it will work flawlessly.

Made a batch of Rogers Tequila recipe back in March, and I have read about letting the liquor breath , I had an idea to make mason jar lids out of cardboard and wrap in Teflon tape ,this would be the lid under the ring, this way it could breath. When I bottled it (jarred) back in March it was right at 50% ABV, thought I would give it a try today and man it was as smooth as water, so I got out the alcoholometer and checked it, it was down to 10%, man I will never let it breath like that again .
The angels share was pretty hefty of this one.:)

Oilguy , that had to hurt . You'll remember it . And the blessing is that if you never made a mistake it was because you never did anything . You are doing and it will get better .

I hooked up with a peace corps girl in Ecuador as a teenager cause my dad had warned me to stay away from the jungle whores. Ended up with the clap.
That was a painful mistake. Never got a damn thing but satisfied from a jungle whore.

In the late 70's a "mujer de la selva" was about two bucks and a couple of drinks per visit.
Spent a lot more than that on the lady from Boston.
BIG mistake.

I shudder when I contemplate all the bullets I dodged in the late '60's . Precocious teen in a college town during the era of free dope/free love/rampaging hormones . Why I didn't die from overexertion or STD's is still a mystery to me . Guess I was saved for better things . Or a worse fate .

Truck, I read your story and recognize myself when I was a youngster. The only thing I don't understand, about my own faith, is why both of my shoulders are completely f*cked up, while my back is just fine!?!

Anyhow, here's a big fuck up, distilling wise. I added a new catalyst with oversized copper SPP underneath my column and did two big runs. Made me some 20 liters of whiskey and some 30 liters of genever. I think I can throw both batches away, since I forgot to clean the copper ovesized SPP. I got (some) oil transfer from the oil we use when making the SPP.

I'll dump both batches.

DARN!!!

Had a "duh" moment today. A while back, I ordered some white oak pen blanks off ebay, and the seller tossed in a few extras - sassafras, cherry and (what I thought was) red oak. I threw out the sassafras, since it's known to be toxic, and I used the cherry. Today, I toasted the red oak but didn't char it, per recommendations I read here. I noticed it had an oily sheen after toasting, but having never used red oak, I figured it was normal. It wasn't until I put it into a liter of product that I realized something wasn't right--it sank like a stone & immediately began to color the liquid. I looked again at the note from the seller, and it didn't say "red oak"; it said "red heart". Otherwise known as chakte kok, red heart is an exotic South American wood. I can't find enough information on it to be sure it's safe, so there goes a perfectly good liter of product. Damn!

EDIT: Here it is, less than an hour after I put the wood in. No way I'm drinking that.

I would IMO study up on exotic woods,90% if not more have toxic resins and or sap in them! Very few in the exotic class would be good to use for Aging in! And I am not a tree specialist, just a dumbass carpenter that has used many exotic woods for trim and ect and they all come with hazard sheets when we get them, for breathing, ingestion, and sliver care if such is encountered!
I am not a botanist but do have some experience in exotic woods so please take the info as you may and tread lightly!

Oh, I know. I'm not going to drink it as it is, and I may not even re-run it, since shaking it shows lots of oils in there. Thinking I may just leave it in the jar with a do-not-drink label, just to see where the color ends up.

That sounds like a really cool idea!!! Put some extra notes on the label thought: date, type of wood, proof, spirit recipe, etc. then stash it for a few years! (This way you will have specific deets if you totally forget about it.

But yeah, clearly mark it as toxic.

About 36 hours after putting it in, it's a very deep ruby color, almost mahogany. Here it is next to a bottle of rum for the sake of comparison.

I won't keep posting these; it's just crazy how red it has turned. It looks absolutely delicious...too bad it's possibly poisonous.

Alcohol is poisonous and charred wood is a carcinogen.
Don't know about the wood in question?

If you think it is poisonous I would pour it out. Don't keep it around for someone else to get it. I would not rerun it.

Pitch that shit immediately , that tree has a high amount of natural latex and rubber. Can only be used in woodworking when covered in a food safe impermeable lacquer or stain.

Yeah, it's gone. I was just keeping it to see what color it turned, and as of this morning it was so dark I couldn't see the stick.

Finished a stripping run of jimbo's wheated bourbon with plans on running my first all grain spirit run this weekend. I rinse out the column/leibig to make sure everything is good to go. A piece of a sponge falls out... Must have got in there during the second stripper run... Lost two all grain runs.

Why'd you lose the runs? Hell, surgeons leave sponges in people all the time. Give it a taste. If everything seems fine, purge that minor blunder from your memory with another taste or 7.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Those sponges didn't have hot solvents run through em, collected and served to the patient tho... Runs were cloudy and have black chunks in em. Don't want first AG to have a disclaimer tied to it. I'll choke down the gumballhead/UJSSM mix till I work up enough to be sure. sure does suck tho- not sure when I'll get the time to make another full run at it.
