Jardin mason jars - "not food safe"?

Picked up a bunch of quart mason jars the other day for a good price. The brand is Jardin. Just noticed that the bottoms say "Not food safe."

They're clear glass jars, not colored or painted. Never occurred to me that clear glass mason jars would be unsafe for food. Any guesses as to why? Who would even make mason jars that aren't food safe?

Quick Google looks like they are geared towards craft use. Maybe they use lower quality ingredients.

They are not produced to stand up to Heat.
A friend bought a few to make lamp globes with the other day.
I think they would be fine for storing Likker.

Nonfoodsafe masonjars. Wow. Whoda thunk. I wonder how much money they saved in comparison to making real mason jars. I hope they were cheap.

Is it just me? Or is anyone else offended by this? I mean, real mason jars will do everything these will, but these won't do everything the real ones will, so what is the advantage to making them in the shape of a mason jar? Unless it is to increase profit by using inferior materials and fooling people into buying them under false pretenses. It seems to me that if they were honest NOT SAFE FOR FOOD would be prominently displayed on the box where you couldn't miss it.

EDIT: Just to be clear, the warning wouldn't be necessary if they looked like dogfood cans or nail kegs, but they look like freaking canning jars.

It makes you wonder how our Forefathers survived their days when the only thing available to them was leaded glass mason jars with zinc lids.
