Sweet Feed

Post by Deerhunter »

Went to my cousins farm this weekend and mentioned I couldn't get any pellet free sweet feed. He said he has someone who makes it up for him. So took some home with me. Does this look acceptable to use in the tried and true sweet feed recipe? I would also like to add some cracked corn to the mixture.

That looks like COB to me as in no Molasses. Does it have the molasses smell and sticky too?

It will work fine, Sweet feed in normally about 30 Corn/30 Oats/30 Barley and 10 percent Molasses So you can easily add it.

I'd use it

Are oats and barley similar in shape and size. When thinking of oats I assumed they looked like the oats in oatmeal. The mix I pictured above seems to have only corn and barley in it.

Oatmeal has been de-hulled, gelatinized and rolled/flaked.

This is what raw oats looks like:

I think I'm better off making my own mix. I was told that the mix I had contained molasses. But after running my hands through it I doubt it contains any. Also contains bits of straw and debris.

You can rinse the straw and debris off in a bucket. The grain will stay in the bottom and you just pour all the floating debris off.

I reckon about one tenth of the total mass should get ya pretty close :egeek:

I have used Producer Pride All Grain for several years and would not use any other brand (after several dismal experiences with other brands). It is not sold as "sweet feed" but they call it "All Grain" It is a COB mix with 12% molasses added and works great. My local Tractor Supply always has it.

What about the crude fat which is added in that mix. Does that cause you any problems?

How much crude fat is in the mix?

Perhaps it's a good anti-foam. :D
Perhaps aerating will be less effective.

Headed up north this weekend and stopped at my favorite feed store Agway and picked up my sweet feed ingredients. Got some strange looks from the guy working in the barn. Cracked corn, Barley and Flaked Oats. I will be Busy tomorrow!

Just a thought.
I'd see if the barley seed will sprout.

@deerhunter if you use brown sugar instead of the white you should get more of what sweet feed should be like...

just my thought on it

Shadylane, I'm not experienced enough to start sprouting that barley. Will need to do some reading on that before I make an attempt. This will be my first Sweet feed run. Would like to make a 30 gallon mash and try some stripping runs and then my spirit run. So far I've only ran single runs of UJSSM. I may take Fullysileneced advice and use brown sugar. I really don't know if its to soon for me to be not following the tried and true recipes. I'm going with the 30/30/30/10 % mixture ratio on the sweet feed mix. I'm up for suggestions.

What I would do is mix the grains 33.3% each. Then follow the instructions for ujssm but use brown sugar instead.
Use the same grains over with backset and all, just using brown sugar each time.
Ujssm is a great recipe as is AND a perfect recipe to experiment with different grains and sugars.
One of my personal favorites is ujssm with corn and oats 50/50
All grain chicken scratch is good too.

The sweetfeed I'm fermenting now for example has no barley, just cracked corn and oats with 10% molasses(labeled as all grain horse and mule feed).
Just follow the recipe for weights of grain and sugars and don't be scared to try different grains and sugars.

Well if my math is right, I did 1.6 oz. of molasses to 1lb. of grain for my sweet feed mix. I did 2 cups cracked corn, 2 cups barley and 2 cups flacked oats which brought me to 1 lb. of mixed grain. Gives me a homemade mix of 33.3% grain which 10% molasses.

Hope the wash is bubbling away nicely.. and almost ready to run. Mine take about 2 weeks to finish and clear. Normally end up about .990-.992 with the past 4 sweet feed I did. First being the least dry due to the un-fermentables in the molasses.

My first 20gal took 5 days. But ran my stripping run and took off 4 gallons of low wines. Don't know if that was a good run or not. Have another 20gal going now with the backset. Will do my spirir run when I have 8 gallons of low wines.

I have been doing 35g at a time so a bit faster to the end and started my first with backset from a barely gumball. Just fished a strip run last night have about 12G of 40% to run a spirit run soon. Not feeling like it today. Should give me at least 2G of 62.5% for aging to add to my other 4g sitting there, Making really tight cuts on this. Its great white.

I must be doing something wrong if I'm only getting 4 gallons of low wines on a 18 gallon stripping run.

I am doing almost 2x that.. also I bet your ABV is over 40% (I accounted for this in my calculation) I also put some feints in from last run.. This helped a lot and accounts for the extra. Without dilution it about a full 6.5g carboy full.

I have some neutrals from a previous reflux run. I didn't make very good cuts with it and was thinking of adding it to my spirit run. Do you think this will affect the flavor of my sweet feed low wines?

Made from UJSSM using corn. Ran off at 95%. Didn't dilute as of yet.

It'll hide the flavor of the sweetfeed. I'd keep them separate.
