Hi everyone, as far as all grain goes i'm a total newbie. I've started looking around farmer's co-op's and such for a good grain source. I don't have a mill, so when looking for barley, found three options other than whole. The problem is that I don't really understand the terminology or how different types relate to mashing (that and the co-op staff don't seem too smart). So, I thought I'd put it to the genius board.
The first one is called "Barley Extruded 22.5Kg". it's pretty dear, will cost me about $40. I though extrusion was about metal...
The second one is called "Reliance S/Flaked Barley 25Kg", and is much cheaper, about $25.
The other is simply "Barley Crushed 25 Kg", which is pretty easy to understand. also about $25.
So (aside from the crushed) what are these different types of barley mean for a brewer / distiller? Sorry if this has been covered before. If someone more knowledgeable than me provided a quick list of different grain processing types, I'd gladly write it up on the wiki... Cheers
