Anyone ever see this?

Post by rgreen2002 »

So I have 35 gallons of wash for a bourbon AG i finished and cleared a week or two ago. Since I only have a 25 gal pot I need to run it twice. I figured I would get out the old pot still head and strip about 20 gallons and then run the rest through the flute later in the week. Pulled a gallon of about 70ABV off crystal clear and then the second gallon. Was finishing off the last 1/2 gallon (the 2 previous gallons just sitting on the side) when I noticed this...
The film on top...
The film on top...
Closer....
Closer....
More closer....
More closer....
It's odd. I didn't see i at first and it is only in the second gallon. It looks organic too... like corn or maybe barley/wheat? The last 1.2 gallon following the second jug...clean as the first (tails cloudy a little but clean).

Stumped...

Totally normal. Corn has a ton of oil and it has a higher boiling point and is insoluble in lower alcohol concentrations. In other words, that's one reason tails get oily like that.

Thanks Deepsouth, your help is always appreciated.

Yep, I get that all the time, more so if I steam strip dirty slop.
It will clear up fine during spirit run.

Looks like you found real tails to me  That cloudy jar you get with sugar washes is just the cute tails. The floating brown oil is the OG legite stuff  Welcome!

Pour it through the "socks" you bought awhile back. Should do the trick.

You were smart to ask, the first time I saw it I thought it was from a cleaning run with something else and tossed the low wines. :(

I often place a coffee filter under the liebig while the second half of a corn-AG stripping run.
But of course the spirit run will clean it up as well.
Corn low wines are more dirty than rye or malt whisky always.

der wo... you know it's odd that I have never seen it before but the more I think about it the more I realize I usually don't strip my AG runs. They usually go into the flute as separate runs and I bottle them differently.. This might be my first AG strip and it sure was dirty!

Like FMH mentioned - I'm going to run it through one of my "socks" as I put it back into the boiler and then run the last 15 gallons together with the low wines from the strip. That should clean it up nice.

Dab it off with a paper towel.
You ain't seen it before or just ain't noticed it.
Get you a flash light and hold it at a angle an it'll show up better. Always ,always dab it off.
Little thangs that separate them that make likker.

So I'm tole
