Today I attempted to make my first corn mash.
2.5 lbs cracked corn, 2.5 lbs flaked corn, 1.5lbs malted barley grain, boiledfirst then simmered in 2.5 gal of water for an hour.
The grains absorbed half the water and turned to a heavy mush. I added more water and under low heat dissolved four lbs of sugar. Tested the specific gravity to a low of 1.040.
What did I do wrong....?

Re: Basic mash problem
If you boiled the malt its enzymatically dead (denatured) and none of your starch converted to sugar.
Re: Basic mash problem
Pick a tried and true recipe and follow it to the letter, that's why they are T&T. Chalk this one up to learning.
