Im sure this has been covered somewhere but i cant find it.....my question
is when you have sprouted the grain how do most people go about getting the
roots off. it seems to me there has to be a more efficient way than i am
imagining. this will be my first attempt at the process this spring and i
want to be 100% ready when the warm weather gets here. and also how
important is it to grind the malt? my theory is all the enzymes will be
there and able to release because the kernel will be open from the sprout.
im sorry if this is covered elsewhere or i posted in the wrong place.....

You "pluck" them off one by one....tup8806 wrote:...my question is: when you have sprouted the grain how do most people go about getting the roots off? i'm sorry if this is covered elsewhere or i posted in the wrong place...
But seriously, here's a good read for you: http://w.homedistiller.org/forum/viewto ... 34&t=53832" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
If you do a HDGoogle search for "malting+grains", you'll get a shit-pot full of reply threads. Read through those to learn more.
Otherwise, start plucking......

Re: Mating questions
I knock them off in the wife's tumble drier. There's not much mating going on for a few weeks after that, I can tell you The sprouts come out with our clothes for months.

When I saw the title, I thought, "It must go along with this. At least I'm not the ONLY one!"
As for maLting, here is Scarecrow's video on the subject that I used:
I don't have a roller so I used the 5 gallon bucket with the screen in the bottom. Made sure the top was on tight and and shook and twisted it to rub the sprouts off.
Since I was only using 6 pounds of wheat and 4 pounds of barley, I ground them in a small Ninja Bullet. The plastic containers are made to grind coffee and spices as well so they did fine.
Good luck!
Re: Mating questions
Gotta grind, sprouting leaves intact hard grains that will not release all the starch or enzymes.
