Here's A research paper on malting
One of my favorite thing in this hobby is all the damn learning and reading
Another is malting, never thought sprouting some grains would be so entertaining
I had a read of this document and thought it might be worth sharing
http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewc ... thealthdoc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I'm always looking for ways to do a better job with my malt
Been doing that for 2 years
They go into detail about the chemical aspect of whats going on during malting
Good read I say

Here's another one, I think I found this when reading about the HBB
You wouldn't believe the price of malt where I live

Hemicellulose & lignin are two of the major flavor contributors in wood. I wonder if we could "age" with husks as an additive (in addition to wood, not as a substitute). It has similar % compositions. The husk accounts for approximately 10-15% of the dry weight of the grain and is made up of cellulose, arabinoxylan (a hemicellulose), lignin, and silica
Example rice husk: http://www.scielo.br/img/revistas/bjce/ ... 13tab1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I wonder if anyone has tried aging on husks or on spent grain? Not sure spent grain would be great but husks only would be interesting to try.
Thanks for posting this - it led me to something else but that's all good!

Re: Here's A research paper on malting
StillerBoy, It has gone down since I last checked, I know a Brewery I could probably get a deal from but I usually need a basic malt. I remember asking around a couple months ago and it was 6 bucks a pound for their basic malt for me that's 4 hours of throwing my back out which is better then 6 but I figure why not keep making it eh. Save that money for these new electric bills
Single Malt, I'll admit I haven't been reading enough to have known that but I imagine it may have a mild bitterness and might make some folks itch.. Otherwise if it tastes like what barley smells like I'd have a sip or two

Basic malt, by that are you meaning 2 row malt,, I can get 2 row malt out of TO for 35$ a 50 lbs bag..
I also get it from two mini brewery in my area, one in Sudbury and one in the Sault, usually in exchange or I buy for 35$.. so I would check out with the owner of mini brewery up your way, never know what they can do for you.. they have to be careful on how many they more, as they are audit not on the amount of beer they made, but on the amount of grains used, from that the government known the amount made.. but a good brewmaster can always write off waste/spillage etc..

I meant a none roasted malt or speciality malt, just malted then minimally kilned. The wheat barley and corn offered at boles is 11 bucks for 50 pounds, I'll buy malted rye and oats because of the safety concern there. I'm going to have to go by the brewery in the next little bit and bug the owner a bit.
