gelantinization of corn - wort bag or not?

Postby seravitae » Thu Oct 02, 2008 4:50 am

Hi guys,

Just a Q to all the corn-cookers out there, i usually use a wort bag (nylon mesh bag suspended in wort cooker), i was wondering if it's suitable to gelantinize in this. Any experiences ?

I never tried a bag but if you go much over 1 lb ( 1/2 kg) a gallon it will git as thick as pudding.I do split conversion do half of the corn convert
then do the other. and by using the sparging water helps to bring up the SG.

interesting. i have 3kg (6.6lb?) corn in the bag + topped the container up (25L capacity). Not sure the of the density of cracked corn, but id say just under 20L (5 gal) water.

I plan to ferment on the grain, so i dont think ill sparge.. I think i also need to make some equipment for proper mashing.. :)

that should work, but at 1kg to 4l it will fill the pot when it swells and is prone to burn.

If you are going to ferment on the grain, there is no need for a bag.
One pound per gallon is easier to mash, but it makes for a pretty low potential ferment.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

actually, to be honest, i got really annoyed with the bag last night and threw it out. I'd rather ferment on the grain and not use the bag, it seems to interfere with gelatinisation. I'll just make a stirrer instead so it doesnt burn..
