Cloudy after Proofing

Postby FancyDave » Thu Mar 29, 2012 7:02 am

Hi All

We are having an issue with proofing on our last 2 runs with BirdWatchers. Most recently, we did a striping run (60L) of BirdWatchers and then a spirit run. The ABV was 92-96% for most of the run. Our Heads and Tails were very defined. We collected in small jars, odorless and clear until tails appeared. Here is our issue. When proofing, we are coming up with a cloudy finish. We have used distillate from early, middle and towards the end with same results. We also tried proofing with TAP water, Filtered Tap water, both room temp and cold,(RODI) Reverse Osmosis Di-Ionized water at room temp. We are going to try distilled water today. Thanks for any help you can give with this problem.

Thanks again
FD

I've never got cloudy hooch when diluting with distilled water ...
...I have with tap water tho.
Your picture looks like the deep tails that come out of my flute before I shut it down ....typically low abv and cloudy.
Let us know what it looks like with distiled water.

I could say the same as NC. Except I use RO water not distilled.

The only time I get clouding is when tails are in the mix.

You mite add the alcohol to the water. Instead if the water to the alcohol.

Let us know how the distilled water turns out.

Are you mixing water into your spirits or spirits into your water...??? Mixing spirits into water will cause less clouding... From science class, "do as you oughter, add acid to water"... The exothermic reaction caused by adding water to spirits is what causes clouding and if there are impurities the clouding will be even worse...
