Column packing

Searched this topic and found some info but I still have questions, using a simple pot still with 2" copper column about 12" long and I bought a roll of copper mesh for packing. Questions are do I just cut offl enough to stuff the rest of the roll in the column and do I have to worry about packing too tight? Should I push the packing all the way to the top? I've ran a couple of runs & now I want to try an experiment to see what if any difference packing will do.

Roll it up so that it fits snug in the column. Not tight. When it is packed you want to be able to breath through it with no problems.

On a pot still of your size. Packing isn't going to do much of anything for you. In a pot still once it gets up to temp. The packing won't be able to do anything. Unless you have some sort of forced reflux to send the reflux back down the packing.

Try if you like. But I would hold off and build a reflux still to use the packing in.
