question about a cork

i went to lowes today and found some wine corks at least thats what they look like are they safe to use

I reckon it depends on how you store the bottle. Upright should be fine, laying on its side would probably cause the cork to disintegrate and leach nasties...
You could try wrapping a thin layer of PTFE around the cork before fitting it...

My understanding is that wine corks should be good upto about 20%, but they are better than their metal cousins...
