Brandy vs Infusion

Post by sltm1 »

I've got 7 gallons of a corn/barley mash ready to distill. I use a pot still w/ thumper, so, if I put the fruit I intend to use for flavoring in the thumper, am I merely infusing or making a brandy? Me-thinks infusing, but I'm not sure. Thanx

yes you are just infusing. Brandy is made from the distillation of fermented fruit wine

Not easy that one. I make sloe gin each autumn. That is an infusion, sometimes in Gin, other times in vodka, whiskey or rum, depending on what I have to hand. They all come out tasting good, but no two batches are the same. They are ALL called "sloe gin" ! As far as I know, there is no gin made from sloes.

Look up peach brandy on Google. Some are infusions, some are just fermented wine like things. Personally, I'd call your thing "Peach whiskey" or "peach shine" - but I think you could call it "Peach Brandy" - as long as you weren't trying to sell it ! (just kiddin')

Cherry Brandy - is definitely an infusion, but is still called cherry brandy and sold as such.
