hey guys im from australia g'day to all
im new to distilling ive done a few home brew beer kits before and started enjoying my whisky a littlle to much and endid up buying a still only 4lt air stil was all i can aford now i have done 3 washes so far all with turbo yeast and im begining to think that all this turbo yeast crap is more of a marketing ploy than a qualty product and from what ive read here this seems to be the route taken buy most of the first timers.... now i love my scoth whisky and have only been doing nuetral suger washes so far just to start getting the hang off it and after trying turbo gold yeast, turbo 24, and now ss tripple distilled yeast ,i recon there not what they claim to be, i have been makeing the right cuts and after 3 washes im starting to notice the taste diference between heads harts and tails but between them all they all smeel like crap and have a rooten taste unles you sit it on activated carbon for week minimum ... now im about to try an all bakers yeast recipe with bran, tomato pate and a little bit of citrick acid i got there recipe here off this forum or the australian one im not sure , and from the reserch if done its ment to s#$t completly over turbo pruducts... but anyway i will post what i recon of the new wash and what i think of the end product compared to this turbo stuff and ill let everyone know..... but i do have one question and odviously comeing from a novie why does it say you have to watter down you your spirit to 40% before filtering through carbon ???? im running of at least 85%plus out of my air still why not just dilute it with coke or(joke) as i have seen it refured on this forum i have tried both and eaither way each one still gets ya rocked ......does it have any afect on filltering???????? or is it more of a safty concern because drinking any spirit strait over 50% can be very hazordos to your health ....???????

Do the active carbon at the highest alc possible. I see it as 100 bad fish in the pond. Will adding more water to the pond make it easier to catch those fish?

Turbos are fantastically fast, but they only do the downhill part. The uphill comes when you try to drink it.

The other way is to do the uphill first, including the stillin, and then the drinkin will be a sweet downhill.

I started with turbo yeast too and all I got from it was foul smell and bad taste! I started to use baker's yeast and found that the smell was far better with no bad after taste! Stay away from the turbo yeast unless you are using it to run your weed eater!

Bakers yeast will usually settle to the bottom (clear) within 48 hours, even at normal fermentation temperatures... Cooler will hasten the process a bit... No clearing agents required and the wash doesn't need to be crystal clear anyway... Most here don't rush things, they just have multiple washes going at varying stages of completion...

forget the turbo clear even my mate who swears by the turbo yeasts wont touch turbo clear anymore. just give any wash a bit of time in a cool place and it will clear just fine.
Gelitine works okay i use it if i need to speed things up for a neutral but the best plan is to hurry up and wait for it to settle by itself.
also someone on this forum has a thread on the modifications you you could/should? make to a air still might be worth checking that info out.
