Used oak barrel chips

Postby Anemephistus » Thu May 10, 2012 2:20 am

So Aging is somthin' I can say a little about. I've had good experiance using jack daniels 100% whiskey barrel oak chips.

I make rum, plain and simple but any time you need aged whiskey barrel wood these are pretty good. If your only aging a little as I do:

Air it out
Add chips
keep out of the light
leave it alone ( cept' for a shake once in awhile)
If you like it spiced Make sure you use top quaility spices for your recipe, it pays off. I use olive nation spices on Amazon they have some good stuff.

Talk to Mash Rookie. He did a lot of experiments on JD Oaking Chips. I use them myself for I think a year now. Like them!

Hi guys, can you use the chips sold in BBQ shops for your liquor?

If it's good enough for smoking it should be good enough for drinking??

I'm after serious replies here, it's a genuine question.

If I can purchase oak wood can I use it? If i can purchase apple wood, can I use it?

Often the wood you can buy (at least around here) is very small. And sometimes it is impregnated with taste chemicals. Don't go that way. What you need to do a search for is Jack Daniels Oaking chips. Made out of used JD barrels, chopped up. Bigger pieces. Not treated in any way.

For example:
