Rum wash not right?

Post by scarecrow »

Put a rum wash down a few weeks ago. It stopped bubbling and I let it sit for about a week.

Did the run today.

I filled the potty up a bit too much and it puked into the thumper which ended up spitting out a dark pukey distillate. :(

So much for the strip run. Plan B. Turned temp way down and ran it very slow. About 3 drips per second.
Thankfully, by the time the hearts kicked in it was not too bad - very very slight yellow tinge but tasted OK and smelled OK.

Will this be OK to age or should I bite the bullet and throw it in the feints jar? I have about a litre at 72% ABV.

Second problem I had was with the SG. I couldn't get an initial reading so I just fermented it anyway.
But, when I opened the lid and tried to do a final SG I got 1.040.

Does this seem odd? I was expecting something closer to 1.000 - 1.050.

Ferment finished in 6 days, but it is a straight molasses wash. 172g/l sugar at 8.6% potential.

Heads lasted a lot longer than I thought. Hearts were nice and went from sugar to shisen real quick. Tails stank like a dead bears bum.

Being my first production rum run, wasn't quite sure what to expect. Did a sugar wash yesterday and it was totally different.

I also noticed the potty had a bit a creamy stuff on the bottom. Some of it was burnt, but only a tiny bit.

I just put down a sour mash. That'll be a new adventure in itself.
