Taste is wrong on sugar wash.

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

Taste is wrong on sugar wash.

Post by jack52 »

I have done my first wash using just sugar yeast and water however although I have had a good strength to the result the taste was just awful. I can't explain the actual taste but can only say that I had to add essences to turn it into a drinkable liqueur .

I did everything the way I was told and my still is a 10gal one.The only thing I was surprised with was the temperature of the water when it came out of the condenser being so hot,I don't know if this can affect the taste or not. Any advise would help a lot.

Hi Jack, too many information are missing here. How did you do the wash, exact recipe and process. Pictures of the still, cleaning procedures you followed prior running the wash. exact procedure you followed during the run. How you did the cuts.

Did you go through the required reading before attempting a run? To stay on the safe side I'd not drink whatever you have produced until you explain all of the above.

Jack.. need more info before help can be provided.. sugar, yeast, water tell nothing..

did you provide yeast nutrients, what yeast was used.. what size of wash, what was your S.G., what was your ph.. what temp
did you ferment at..

my still is 10 gal.. states only boiler size.. what setup are you using, pot , LM, VM, CM.. did you stripped the wash first then a spirit run next..

taste will predominately be what your wash was / made of or from..

Need more info..

The water coming from the condenser is certainly not the culprit. If it's too hot, there will be vapors escaping the end of the pipe...nothing more.
However, that's bad enough, cause not only do you loose product, but you also create a dangerous situation..! So take care of the proper cooling.
As the other gents have asked...what still etc..?
Also...what kind of seal do you use on your equipment?

... or pH crashing or lack of nutrients or too hot ferment temps ... or generally taking a sugar wash above 8% will cause hotter tastes by definition. Or indeed cuts.

We need more info to be able to get you on the right path.

I think the advice to go follow a proven recipe may be a wise choice.

I'm betting on "Turbo" to be the problem.

So pH crashing and lack of nutrients may be the cause ...

Hi fella's thanks for getting back to me and sorry I took my time.

Ok so my wash was 8 gallon water with 30lb sugar using Alcotec 48 hour turbo yeast.Fermentation stopped at 8 days giving 18% alcohol content. Used VWP cleanser/ sterilizer on equipment which is an 8 gal larger keg which has had a heater installed in side of it which is on a constant temp that can't be regulated. I have an online copper mesh filter installed and a parrot at the end so I can measure alcohol strength in batches. I read that if you are just making sugar/water strength then there is no need to disguard the first 6 ozs as it will not hurt the results. As for the start and end sg I cannot remember what they were.No nutrients were added.Hope this answers some of your questions .

Thanks for your time on this subject.

Haha. They're just getting lazy these days.

Edit: I meant that in a way becuase if you are a troll, you're not trying very hard.

I edited to actually take the time to respond. You have no place to be running that still. You were given advice on two of those points back in July, and you ignored them, so why the hell should we keep helping you?

You asked the same question about fores then, with the same misconceptions. You were told to go to tried and true, and you didn't.

http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 0#p7422644

Aside from that, you know everything wrong you did, becuase you posted everything wrong you did. Turbo yeast, high abv, non regulated heat input, and of course you stuck the the plastic tip onto the condensor as the cherry on top.

If I thought you actually cared, I would try to give you next level advice and tell you to move the electric element lower to be able to run smaller batches if you wanted. That thing now can easily become uncovered.

But you're not here to become better, you're here for a laugh. Or to waste or time. Either way, just stop.

It's just aweful because you did zero cuts.
I'm sure the turbo yeast did not help either.
18% is super high wash, I rarely go over 7%, my current one is 5%.

good way to get nice flavors is to add stuff to your wash like cornflakes or what ever you fancy and keep the ABV low

Yep I'll lay my bets with SOCDs take on things this looks like it could be a Numbskull effort at first glance but the pointless leckie taping of the plastic drain pipe over the dick spout is a give away , nice shot at humour maybe the circus is hiring :moresarcasm:

Yeah, count me in with the Diamond, too.

Just because he wants to be a troll doesn't necessarily mean that he would be any good at it.

+1 Diamond..

Maybe he should listen to some music from Pink Floyd and stick to the store bought stuff.
The music will be awesome, but he'll never learn how real good spirits can taste.....what a shame.
