Copper/Tin And oxy/set

Postby Enlikil » Wed Sep 13, 2006 7:30 am

When you talk of Joining a copper column to a stainless steel bowl and say to use a Ocy/Set torch and 2% silver/98% copper (insert name here) what is it you are talking about, I can not find anything around here to Use safeyly to join them together, unless i'm asking for the wrong thing..
So we have All sorts of welders here ( i guess we don't have a tig ) we have a wire feed and oxy/set...
So, my question is what should i be asking my welder?
Thanks

Enlikil,

The terminology for joining two dissimilar metals is called 'brazing' - it can have some fancy names like 'silver brazing' etc but basically is just called brazing.

Check it out here http://www.handyharmancanada.com/TheBra ... /bbook.htm

Use an Oxygen/acetylene welding set and what you want to do is (in Australia) commonly called 'silver soldering'. a common practice, particularly with plumbers

There is one combination that does not work very well. If you use oxy/acetylene to braze copper to stainless steel, using yellow brass, you will destroy the stainless steel if the brass becomes thicker than the ss. The different coefficients of expansion may cause the stainless to have micro cracks radiating from the braze outward to two inches long. This has happened to me three times. I had to scrap both the bowls and the idea. The copper brazing, like used for silver soldering hvac tubing it not as bad but can work. The best luck I have had joining copper to stainless steel is by using a good mechanical connection and then use soft tin with silver content using very low temperature gas or electric soldering techniques and hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride liquid or paste. There have ben others on this forum complain about the brass brazing nearly destroying their setup.
