Not playing the devils advocate here but taken in context it isn't all that bad considering there is no state sale tax in Oregon... From that tax map, add your sales tax to your states sales tax and Oregon isn't that much worse overall tax-wise... In fact, it's cheaper than many states... Sin tax but no sales tax... And it's the sales tax that gets you over time because liquor is a small percentage of your overall spending... Statistics are only as good as their intended agenda...pfshine wrote:Dear Lord, I just vomited a little. I can say I will never live there under such unbelievable taxation.KingE wrote:20% sales tax.

Re: Oregon
I can buy a bottle of makers mark for 21 dollars plus a 8% sales tax. So what 22.90 or so? Also I fan do it at 11 pm. Now I would never buy that garbage but I could if I wanted to..

Re: Oregon
Yeah 8.1 sales, no state income tax, and the alcohol tax is 3.60. Either way it's all bad, tax is out of control, way out of control

Re: Oregon
It seems many of us have made some valid points. I don't pretend to know all the answers nor all the facts. I jumped on the bandwagon (as I do on occasion of taxes) without listening to all sides. But I have concluded that in spite of our differences of opinions, we can all agree on this one point.......why are we taxed at all in the first place? Nuther subject for another time for the politically motivated? And Tater is certainly not going to allow that! Nuff said.

Ya gotta fund the schools somehow. We get socked pretty hard on property tax. The state makes a ton of money on lottery and poker machines. It's just another tax that is sort of voluntary. Sales tax tends to be very regressive, too. PotAtoe, potOtoe. Ya gotta fill the potholes in the spring.

I hear what your sayin' Skow, and I respect your points. I agree with voluntary taxes. I just don't like being forced to pay for what others want. I raised my kids many years ago (home school), why should I be forced to pay for yours or others? And I don't have a problem paying for what I use (roads or whatever). I do have a problem for being taxed for what I make, or what others make.skow69 wrote:Ya gotta fund the schools somehow. We get socked pretty hard on property tax. Just my 2 cents. But this is a great discussion and I am open minded.

Black velvet is $7.99 pre taxOldvine Zin wrote:
But Cranky those prices do not include the washington state liquor tax - for an example the black velvet you have listed as 9.63$ is really 12.43$ at checkout

Edit
Sorry, I did miss the additional hidden fee. The actual final cost is $12.46 post tax. However I personally still feel it is worth every penny to get the liquor out of the incompetent hands of the people who were controlling it.

Why would a person pay for insurance if they don't use but others do...??? It's called sharing the burden and that's how it is with school taxes... Those school taxes pay to educate the people who will eventually be your firemen, policemen, school teachers, doctors, politicians, and the list goes on... Home schooling doesn't negate your responsibility to pay your local school taxes because it isn't just about you and/or your children considering some folks never had children yet paid school taxes their entire lives... But I digress... This topic was started with liquor taxation in mind, not the schooling of our children...GrassHopper wrote:I hear what your sayin' Skow, and I respect your points. Now back to likker taxes.
Re: Oregon
Once upon a time you could get around the tax if you travel as much as I get to, you could get Duty-Free. But for almost the last decade there has been no savings to it compared to Oregon liquor pricing. Besides most of it's now all skull splitting crappy booze.
People say that I'm a bad influence. I say the world's already f#cked -- I'm just adding to it.

Would this be because "the fox is watching the hen house"? Give a politician the power to levy taxes and guess who's salary keeps pace with inflation? And who has the greatest tax shelter...the guy in charge of making the rules!pfshine wrote:Yeah 8.1 sales, no state income tax, and the alcohol tax is 3.60. Just in case any of you missed my correction I would like to repeat it, OVZ is correct and I missed the extra hidden fee on the Total Wine website that raises the final price of that bottle of black velvet to $12.46
So contrary to my previous statement we here in Wa do pay ridiculous amounts for liquor. I still feel the government has no business selling it any more than than they have any business monopolizing groceries or cars or houses or bicycles or any other retail item whether they deem it a sin, luxury or necessity including cigarettes. I don't smoke but I know many members here do, can you imagine having to go to a government run smoke shop? Can you imagine only being allowed to buy a small percentage of the brands you are now allowed to buy just because some government stooge decided not to sell them in your area?
Yes Wa botched the privatization just like they botch so many other things but they botched monopolizing liquor first and so many other things. I believe OR will learn from this and do better when they eventually move into the modern world in respect to how liquor is sold in that state.
I also believe this thread is in danger of being too political and will probably be locked soon so be careful how you post on it.

Re: Oregon
As been my reservation. I voted when this came up and still have mixed feelings about my decision. I'm all for privatization in %99 of cases. What upsets me is that to get this to make the ballot with enough political support from Olympia, they had to introduce an egregious sin tax. However, that was not mentioned in the information booklet they supply with the ballots. Go figure, right?cranky wrote: I also believe this thread is in danger of being too political and will probably be locked soon so be careful how you post on it.
It's not all that dissimilar to the new federal legislation regarding healthcare. We since have learned that the authors wrote details into the package that have absolutely nothing to do with our healthcare system. I think this sort of legislative practice is flat out underhanded, and very telling to the realities of our situation.
I will retract my original statement and support Oregon if they can get this done without nefarious tax tricks.
Re: Oregon
I guess I'm just silly enough to believe that I am better off when everybody's kids get educated. As a member of this society, I want the entire society to improve and progress, and I understand that I have to pay my share to make that happen.
What I object to is Mit Romney paying a 15.9% tax rate while you and I pay 35%.
