This seems like a good place to ask - for those who have aged in barrels, what is your climate and what have you found your losses to be? One of the blurbs on the parent site suggests a loss of 1 qt per month in a 5 gallon barrel, that's 5% per month! It also recommends topping off, do you top off as well?

Pope,

Here's a good read which may answer your questions: https://oakbarrelsltd.com/files/The%20A ... 20More.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Keep it in your refernce documents for further refernce too.

Pope, without going back and rereading the articles that seems like a lot more loss than I am experiencing. I am sure in my barrels as I usually age 4-6 months I am not loosing that quantity to the Angels share.

I've had a 15 gallon full of rum for 3+ months and definitely have not lost 3 quarts, I'd say it's down about a pint.
I realize everything is slower in a 15 gallon versus a 5 gallon barrel.

Damn 8 gallon barrel full is down to about 2 gallons left though... Maybe it's experienced a bit too much sampling.

At first I was going to say - look at how much evaporation has taken place in this display cask of sherry. However after further reading of the Spanish method of “solera” blending and then of them only partially filling a cask to encourage the development of “flor” I have changed my mind.

My personal experience is that here on the wet side of Wa our angels aren't as thirsty as they may be some other places, even in the dry months.

Not sure of the why, but I have seen similar results.

What you need is an airtight secondary vessel around each barrel that can catch all the evaporated spirit and funnel it to a receiver. Once the receiver fills up you take the collected spirit and add it back to the barrel....half joking and half not. I bet such a system could be contrived.

If it ain't the government then it's supernatural beings. Everybody wants a piece of what you make. I guess sharing is caring lol.
