How to get 80% out of a AirStill?

Post by dustytrash »

I've got my low wines ready to dillute and distill into a spirit run. I am going to follow this
Updated Airstill Stripping.jpg
However I would like to end up with some 80% spirit. How can I do this? For example, I can see 30% creates 75-78%, how can I up it by 5%? It's my understanding I'm safe to distill 40%. Do I need to use 40% input to get 80% hearts?

I have no experience with one, so i have no idea, but ill tell ya you could easily build a small still and accomplish all this in alot less time, probably with a higher and better yield.

The only way is to put a higher spirit in, but this is dangerous because it becomes very flammable.

I have done it (as an experiment in a safe environment and it was fine) but would not recommend it as it could burn your house down...

I did a heads triple distill and some extra wash I had and it worked just fine, went in at 50ish percent came out bang on 80 for a large portion of the run. remember inefficient pot still.

Are you sure you need 80%? Most recipes and methods can be adapted to utilize lower abvs.

It's a recipe my friend gave me, 1.5L 80% shine, 4L apple juice, 4L apple Cider, 10 cinnamon sticks.
It creates ~12% finished product.

You're right though, I should adjust the recipe and keep the input at 30%. Tbh I didn't really want to increase the input % for safety anyways.

40% is fine and is better than 30% if you want close to 80% in your finished product.

I believe that the math works out that 1.5L @ 80% plus 8L at 0% = 9.5L at 13.47%
Using 1.5L @ 60% is 10.3%.
Using 1.5L @ 60% along with 3L + 3L is 12.8%.

I have an AirStill (adjustable temp model), and routinely get 77-79% from my second distillation. My first is a stripping run, that results around 45% (I won't distill a wash greater than that for fire safety). The second distillation is in the high 70's. This is also where I cut my heads and tails. Good luck!

40% is the maximum recommended here.
